The most frustrating thing about wearing masks is that sometimes people misjudge you based on assumptions built upon THEIR expectations of us. Sometimes it is hard to expose ourselves in public and show our vulnerable side. We tend to put on a brave face and hide away our guilt, anger, disgust, misery, sadness or even joy at times.
Our actions are constantly compared to social norms and personal standards. When we fall short of these expectations we are often ignored, shunned, rejected and excluded from the society.
Even when our actions are based on good intentions.
Even when we acted inconsiderately on accident.
At times of naivety.
At times of desperation.
In moments of joy.
In moments of sorrow.
Why do we do this?
It seems that..when we get to know someone..we realise that our perception of that person changes.
We know their history, and background.
We UNDERSTAND their decisions and actions.
Ironically it takes a lifetime to understand someone, but it only takes seconds for us to reject someone.
I want to know why you choose to exclude us when we've done nothing wrong.
I want to know why you choose to ignore us when we try to be your friend.
I want to know why you despise us just because we are different from the norms.
I want to know why you shun us when we open our arms to you.
I want you to answer my questions.
I dare you.
You know who you are.
When you look down deep inside, you know you don't hate us.
You know that you are sad.
You are afraid.
You are scared of losing what's dear to you.
Deep down you are still a little child wanting attention and loyalty.
Our actions and decisions do not mean we are not loyal to our friends.
In fact we love our friends.
We won't betray you.
We won't run away from you.
We forgive you and your misperceptions of us.
So
Please
Reconsider your thoughts and judgments of us.
Open your eyes.
And grow up.
We are still your dear friends despite the changes.
We will continue to open our arms to you.
In times of sorrow.
In times of joy.
In times of frustration.
In times of need.
Do not be afraid.

i agree.
ReplyDeleteBut our masks are there for a reason. We learn who we can and cannot trust, and for those who prove themselves trustworthy, we let them know more, a little at a time, until eventually they know all of us and we feel secure that we're loved no matter who we are and what we do.
So guess masks not such a bad thing after all.
Although I do feel the frustration when i want to understand more, but cant, because i dont know someone that well.
that sounds like a piece of writing on identity&belonging ..
ReplyDeleteanyways ,
(i wont be as detailed as cord's)
..
maybe some "sacrifices" are needed to fit back into the "jigsaw puzzle" .
or maybe everything is already like pieces of shattered puzzle .. might need a while to put everything back together :s
yay puzzles..
ReplyDeleteThere is always a solution to a puzzle. Getting to the end of one is as important as the journey it takes to do so. If a puzzle piece is missing, who says you can't craft one? =]
Life is full of options "outside" the square.
a person who wears a mask, is just more scared of people seein who they really are, aint they
